Monday July 22 @ 7:30 pm
about the artist
The Journey Arts Collective (JAC) is excited to invite you to an evening with Grammy Award winning artist Kirk Whalum as part of ‘The Purple Couch’ series.
Kirk Whalum developed his musical voice in the club scene of Memphis, TN before taking his sound to Los Angeles, where he became an in-demand session player for top artists such as Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and most notably, Whitney Houston. Among many other featured musical performances, it’s his sax heard on the mega-hit, “I Will Always Love You.”
Kirk Whalum has 25 solo recordings to date, and is also a member of the popular soul/jazz group, BWB. As an ordained minister, he serves in the community as his touring allows. Kirk is passionate to educate the next generation of artists, and is currently engaged as a music professor at Visible Music College, in his hometown of Memphis.
We get a glimpse into Kirk Whalum’s musicianship and heart in a documentary that is yet to be released. Here’s the trailer:
